London Design Festival - Graphic Design Walk 23/9/2011

Book covers for Penguin Books by Coralie Bickford-Smith. Each cloth bound book in the Jane Austen classic collection uses 2 colours in its design. I noticed we had the book 'Emma' at work the other day with the cloth bound Bickford-Smith design.

I am also rather taken by the t-shirts designed by Bickford-Smith for the Penguin helpers at the Art Car Boot Sale... http://www.cb-smith.com/index.php?/etc/penguin-t-shirt/
At the 10 Collective stand at the bast camp I stood and watched the video above being projected onto the wall. After a few seconds, I recognised James and Elliot of Birch studios chatting to 2 members of 10 Collective. In the video, they talk about setting up your own design studio.

Watch the video here (sorry guys) http://10collective.com/teawith10.html
YCN... fully prepared and loaded with brochures.
I bought the book 'Hand Job' from a book shop on Rivington Street and this is the bag they gave me. It's a keeper.

Missed this band!!

I have not listened to this song/album in oh so long!! I don't think this is the official video, but it's actually rather cool. It has elements of Beautiful Losers in it, such as Shepard Fairey, drawing on trains, skating, and even a skating policeman?!

New York time lapse

The most impressive time lapse video I have seen. Definitely worth a watch! The music goes with it beautifully and actually makes me feel quite emotional. I love all the cars, people and aeroplanes. The American project might be over soon, but I cannot wait to go there one day.

Reflection

Chester's essay presentation today made me think a little more about the video I posted yesterday. The video was 2 men putting old letterpress into a computer typeface format. The fonts they uploaded are ones that only exist now in wooden letterpress.

New Digital Fonts from Rare Letterpress Wood Type Kickstarter Video from Bearded Studio on Vimeo.

I enjoyed the video and the idea and the way they freely spoke about it although I felt a bit disheartened when they got to the vector stage and editing out the 'undesireable' parts of the letters. I don't think they got rid of all the print effects, although the example at the end looks like the original proof before it was edited. It's all very well taking these to the computer and applying texture there (it's a clever idea) but it is such a good experience to ink up the letters and print them by hand/in a press.
